ELON MUSK JUST REVOLUTIONIZED DESIGN FOREVER

After tweeting the idea of a real life hand gesture design printed in titanium, Elon Musk promised a video follow up this week. He lived up to that promise, tweeting out the video below. The era of 3D printing is here. See for yourself how this unreal, revolutionizing advancement in computer-human interactions will revolutionize industrial design as we know it.  via @elonmusk

FISH BOOTH: FRESH USE OF A USELESS OBJECT

Who's used a phone booth recently? I can't think of the last time I stepped into one (on purpose). Thanks to lighting designer Benoit Deseille and artist Benedetto Bufalino, the phone booth has a new life.

Taken to task to contribute to the annual Festival of Lights in Lyon, France, Benoit and Benedetto have transformed an unused phone booth into a living aquarium. The juxtaposition and intrigue this simple installation has generated gives new reason to re-examine modern day uses of abandoned and obsolete structures such as the lonely phone booth. With the right city works and community involvement, a world with street aquariums has an exciting future. Via: Good

The artists inspiration explained:

With the advent of the mobile telephone, telephone booths lie unused.
We rediscover this glass cage transformed into an aquarium, full of
exotically colored fish; an invitation to escape and travel.

TEXTEES OR GLOVES FOR YOUR THUMBS.

Saw this on MTv of all places late last night. Last I checked, texting wasn't such an issue that I needed a typing condom. But the low budget commercial is nothing short of awesomely horrible with its catchy 'Get a Textee' anthem.  I can't wait to see your fat thumbs with these things on.

TWO DUTCH FOOTBALL FANS REINVENT T-SHIRT DESIGN

Anyone who follows football knows goal celebrations typically lead to the scoring player pulling his jersey over his head followed by a barrage of fist pumps and vein-popping primal screams. It's probably the most dramatic display of achievement in all of sports. Design students Bas and Daan took this insight and created a shirt to give Dutch KVNB loyalists a way to celebrate every goal like a pro. Way to innovate. via: Advertising Lab

KICKING IT OLD SCHOOL: MUSIC VIDEO FLASHBACK

Before Spike Jonze rose to fame as a movie director, he was kicking ass on MTV. This video for 'California' by Wax is a study in simplicity both in technique and concept. The slow motion builds in a gapers-block sorta way, culminating in the final shot revealing disinterested kids watching this unfold. In a time when pushing the boundaries is a daily thing, Spike has been a pioneer, an innovator in every story his films –short or long– tell.

ONE SMALL HOLE FOR PILLOW, ONE GIANT SLEEP FOR MANKIND

The pillow: fluffy, firm, memory foam, space age particles. Forget all of that. This brilliant upgrade solves the one conundrum every sleeper has had since its invention, where to put that damn arm. I love sleeping on my arm. Sometimes I don't even use a pillow. Now I won't have to worry about muscle cramps and dislocated shoulders. It also makes a great 'hiding place.'

THE BATTLE OVER SAMPLING LAWS

PBS has this documentary, Copyright Criminals, about the art of sampling, an act of borrowed interest used in every project a DJ takes on. And then some. Creatives commons is a big issue, and PBS breaks down how new technology is paving the path for a battle over digital ownership.
